Hamilton wins Crazy race at Mugello

Date published: 13th September 2020

Another weekend and another crazy weekend of racing. The initial start saw Max Verstappen in trouble with a lack of power, which ultimately led to a pile of cars colliding and the Safety Car making it’s first appearance.

As the Safety Car pulled in, Bottas – the race leader after a great start, waited until the last moment to blast off, and rightly so – to maintain his lead. But as he did this, the second half of the field started racing before the front half and chaos came with multiple cars crashing on the start/finish straight.

With the race red flagged, we eventually got underway again from a standing start where Hamilton got the better of Bottas into turn one and looked to be running off with the win, Bottas powerless to do much about it.

We had a thrilling battle for 3rd and beyond between Ricciardo, Albon, Stroll and Perez with Norris chasing in P7.

Just when we thought it was going to be a straight run to the finish, Stroll had an issue which sent him off at high speed, bring out the safety car for a 3rd time and then the race being red flagged again and another race restart from the grid, now with 12 cars remaining.

Hamilton maintained P1 at the restart and ran on to win the crazy race, Bottas dropped to 3rd but quickly retook P2 from Ricciardo. Unfortunately for Ricciardo, Albon was on form for Red Bull and snatched P3 with just 10 laps to go. Just what Albon needed after a season of ups and downs.

We only had 12 finishers for the race today. Points shown below for Fantasy GP. We had a total of 3 safety car periods, Hamilton bagged the fastest lap and for the bonus question regarding Gasly, he failed to finish, so the correct prediction was c) 13th or worse.

Note that Kimi had a 5s time penalty for an unsafe entry to the pit lane so finished a final position of P9
