Verstappen WINS in Hungary
Date published: 31st July 2022
Late into Q3 yesterday, I don’t think an angry, sweary Verstappen would have dreamed of standing on the top step of the podium today. Starting 10th, a combination of pace and strategy delivered a fairly comfortable win, despite the threat of rain in the last lap or two. Mercedes also delivered a fantastic 2nd and 3rd for the second race in a row, while Ferrari’s incompetence seemingly knows no bounds, Leclerc’s flirtation with the hard tyres being a recipe for disaster. Sadly, there didn’t have any comparable data… [sic]
In Fantasy GP terms, we had a podium comprising of Verstappen, Hamilton and Russell with a charging Hamiton taking the fastest lap as well. There were 2 safety car periods, both virtual, with one at the start following contact and the latter after Bottas’ late retirement. Russell, of course, shocked everyone with a surprise pole on Saturday. The answer to the bonus question was C (12th or lower) with Bottas failing to make the finish.
Verstappen took the largest bonus point haul with 27, but memorable mentions must go to Vettel and Gasly with 24 each, the former delivering a points finish following his decision to retire at the end of 2022.
Here’s the complete breakdown of points for the Hungaroring. Fantasy GP takes a summer break alongside F1, although the game will still reopen by midday BST Monday for summer tinkering. We’ll see you in approximately four weeks in Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgium GP. Enjoy your summers!
