Verstappen WINS in Japan

Results are in for the Japanese Grand Prix! How did you do?

Date published: 9th October 2022

It is safe to say that rain didn’t bring a procession in Japan. A long, frustrating delay for the weather (affected further by the recovery vehicle controversy) was followed by 45 action-packed minutes, with close battles between Perez and Leclerc, plus Hamilton and Ocon.

A lot of fun, with Verstappen making it look very easy at the front in tough conditions. Following Lelerc’s penalty, he also landed the World Championship for the 2nd time in the most confusing of circumstances. Quite similar and yet so different from his first…

For the avoidance of doubt, full points were awarded for this race, as (quoting an Andrew Benson tweet): “So, it seems Verstappen is champion. The regs say staggered points only comer in “if a race is suspended in accordance with Article 57, *and cannot be resumed*”. The race was resumed, so the FIA says that means it’s full points.” Clear as mud, eh?”

In Fantasy GP terms, we had the podium of Verstappen, Perez and Leclerc with Zhou clocking the fastest lap. On Saturday, it was Verstappen that secured a slight controversial pole position after his near collision with Norris (though they seem friends again today). Wet conditions brought the Safety Car out just one time (and it was considered continuous before/after the red flag). On bonus points, we asked about the highest places gained and the answer was C (Latifi with an impressive 33). Memorable bonus point mentions to Stroll (21 points) and Magnussen (12) in a short race!

Please find a full breakdown of the points below. We’ll be back open by midday on Monday (BST) ahead of a trip to Austin for the US Grand Prix in a fortnight.
